UNESCO Awards for 2009

The FELIX HOUPHOUET- Boigny Peace Prize

The Felix Houphouet Biogny Peace Prize is intended to honour living individuals and active public or private bodies or institutions that have made a significant contribution to promoting, seeking, safeguarding or maintaining peace in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitution of UNESCO.

The prize comprises a cash award of 150,000 United Stares Dollars, a gold medal and a peace diploma and is awarded every year to one or more prizewinners by an International Jury.

The Secretariat for Coordination of the Peace Process (SCOPP) together with the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO (SLNCU), have submitted a nomination of the officers from the Health and Education Ministries, who had been deployed in the conflict ridden North and East of Sri Lanka, for this peace prize.

The behaviours of the Ministries of Health and Education, who have, on principle strived hard to ensure the essential services and its officials, who have and continue to risk their lives daily, to serve in the former and current war torn areas held by the LTTE in the Northern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka, therefore justly fall within the aforementioned parameters of building peace.
